Chris Hughton rewarded with monthly gong for steering Brighton to the top of the Championship

The Irish manager has masterminded the Seagulls’ flight to the top of England’s second tier.

CHRIS HUGHTON HAS been named the Championship Manager of the Month for December.

The former Ireland international guided his team to a four wins and one draw in a month that saw them leapfrog Newcastle United into first place in the division.

“As a manager it’s always wonderful. In effect, I’m only picking it up on behalf of my staff, but more so for the players,” Hughton said after winning the award.

“They’ve been outstanding for me and it’s always a nice feeling when the club gets recognised for a way of playing. I’m picking it up on behalf of them.”

The former Norwich City and Newcastle manager took over the reins at the Amex Stadium in December 2014 and narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season.

The 58-year-old’s efforts were, however, recognised in the form of a new four-year contract in May 2016.
