New contract will keep Cian Healy in Ireland until after the 2019 World Cup

The loosehead’s three-year central contract will take him beyond his 30th birthday.

IRELAND AND LEINSTER loosehead prop Cian Healy has agreed a new three-year central contract with the IRFU.

The powerful 28-year-old has had a troubled 12 months with injury as neck and knee operations threatened his involvement in the World Cup and Six Nations respectively.

However, the Dubliner has routinely shown remarkable powers of recovery and is set to be fit for Ireland’s Six Nations visit to Twickenham on 27 February.

“Cian is one of the most explosive athletes in world rugby and has proven for both Ireland and Leinster his ability to compete at the highest levels of the game,” IRFU performance director David Nucifora said in a statement.

Healy has won 56 caps for Ireland, 148 for Leinster and was also selected for the 2013 Lions tour to Australia. His new deal will not expire until after the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The Clontarf man took the official announcement of his new contract to give an update about his physical condition before expressing enthusiasm for the pool of talent at Leinster.

“I feel that I am coming back to full fitness now and would like to thank the medical and S&C teams for their ongoing support.

“There are a lot of exciting young talented players coming through at Leinster and Ireland and I am looking forward to competing for silverware over the next few seasons.”
