Brentford sign 'leader' John Egan from Gillingham

The Cork native has turned down a deal with League One side Gillingham in order to move up a division

BRENTFORD HAVE SIGNED former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international John Egan on a three-year deal.

The Championship club announced the news on Friday and 23-year-old moves to Griffin Park after turning down a contract with former club Gillingham.

League One side Gillingham will be owed compensation, due to Egan’s age, and Brentford confirmed that negotiations “are continuing” between the clubs.

Commenting on the new signing, Brentford head coach Dean Smith described the former Sunderland player as a “leader” and “a proper centre back.”

“John is someone we believe can come in and challenge for a place in the team,” Smith told the club’s website.

“I watched him a lot when he was at Sunderland and when he went out on loan. He is a proper centre back and has a hunger to keep the ball out of the net. He is a good defender and a good footballer as well.

“He is also a leader and we want to keep adding leaders to the squad.”

A native of Cork, Egan made 81 league appearances in two seasons at Gillingham, scoring 10 goals.

He began his career with Greenwood before signing for Sunderland. The defender enjoyed a series of loan spells with Crystal Palace, Sheffield United, Bradford City and Southend before moving permanently to Gillingham.
