Cork City tie down Ireland underage prospect

Republic of Ireland U19 international Brian Lenihan has signed a deal to remain at Turner’s Cross until 2014.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND youth international Brian Lenihan has agreed a new contract which will see him stay at Cork City until the end of the 2014 season.

The news comes a day after Lenihan was again named in Paul Doolin’s U19 squad for the forthcoming UEFA Championships qualifying tournament.

The 18-year-old, who can play in defence and in midfield, has made a handful of competitive appearances as a substitute since his move to Turner’s Cross from College Corinthians in June.

Lenihan made his debut for the Ireland U19s in September’s drawn friendly against Latvia in Riga.

“In fairness to Brian he has done quite well since he has come in and he is now in the first team group,” City boss Tommy Dunne told the club website. “It has been quite a quick transition for him, and we are delighted that he wanted to sign for the club and be a part of the future of this club.

“He is a young, ambitious player who is hungry to succeed in the game, and we see him as an integral part of the future of this club.”

Republic of Ireland U19 squad: Ian Lawlor (Manchester City), Danny Rogers (Aberdeen), Brian Lenihan (Cork City), Thomas Hoban (Watford), Pierce Sweeney (Reading), Ryan O’Reilly (Stoke City), Shane Griffin (Reading), Bradley Garmston (West Bromwich Albion), Ryan Coombes (St Patrick’s Athletic), Luke Gallagher (Burnley), Kenneth McEvoy (Tottenham Hotspur), Kieran Sadlier (West Ham Utd), Michael Drennan (Aston Villa), Conor Wilkinson (Millwall), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Noe Baba (Castlebar Celtic), Conor Pepper (Inverness Caledonian Thistle), Sam Byrne (Manchester United).
