CORK CITY HAVE announced the signing of Darren Dennehy today, while former England international Gary Stevens has been confirmed as the new assistant boss at Sligo Rovers.
Dennnehy is a Republic of Ireland under-21 international, and is the younger brother of ex-City winger Billy.
He joins the club, having previously had spells at Everton, Cardiff and Barnet.

City manager Tommy Dunne said he was pleased to have secured the player’s services.
“Darren is an experienced player and, being from Tralee, is relatively local also. Obviously we have had his brother Billy here previously, and I have heard a lot of good things about Darren. I have seen him play myself previously with the Irish Under 21s, and he impressed me. He is a good addition to the squad and I believe his signing will strengthen the team, so I am delighted to have him on board.”
Meanwhile, Dennehy added:
“I’m delighted to have signed; I’m looking forward to getting into training and getting to know the lads. I’ve heard a lot about the club from Billy. He had a lot of good things to say about the club, he loved his time at Cork City and said that I would enjoy playing for the club too. There is a good team here, and I am looking forward to pre-season now.”
In addition, Sligo boss Ian Baraclough expressed his delight at tying up the deal to enable ex-Tottenham player Stevens to become part of his backroom staff on a one-year deal.
“I was taken by Gary as a coach, his manner, his knowledge of the game and the experience he brings with him,” he said.
“You make contact with people over your career and Gary is a person that immediately I found easy to speak to and we share similar philosophies over a wide range of areas. I think he will be well-received.
“He was very impressed by the players and the people in the town on how the football club is such a big part of the region. I spoke to him on a few occasions about the club and the fantastic facilities and the set-up here. I don’t think he anticipated exactly what it would be.”
