GALWAY HAVEN’T WON the Liam MacCarthy Cup since 1988, but their performance against Tipperary yesterday has put them firmly in the conversation for this year’s All-Ireland.
Micheál Donoghue’s men beat Tipp by 16 points – the biggest final winning margin since Tipp beat Galway 3-15 to 0-8 in 1979.
Yesterday’s win marks a significant step for Galway, as it’s their first major hurling silverware win since the 2012 Leinster final.
The dominance they showed yesterday over the current All-Ireland champions was very convincing. They scored 3-21, but had 17 wides along with that. The damage to Tipp could have been much worse.
It’s been hard to look past Kilkenny and Tipperary for the past few years, but Galway will be licking their lips at the prospect after their performance yesterday. The question is whether they can hold the form through to September.
