Sweeney and Walsh hit the net as Galway see off Westmeath in Division 2

Kevin Walsh will be happy with his start to life as Galway boss.

Galway 2-13
Westmeath 2-12

GALWAY’S BRIGHT START to Division 2 of the Allianz football league continued today as they picked up the points on offer with a victory over Westmeath in Mullingar.

After last week’s win at home to Meath, Galway maintained their good form at Cusack Park today. Westmeath saw off Laois last Sunday but were unable to claim a second successive victory.

New Galway boss Kevin Walsh will be pleased with their form ahead of the three-week break and particularly at how they have bounced back from the FBD league final loss to Roscommon a fortnight ago. His Killanin clubmate Patrick Sweeney really caught the eye today as he landed 1-5 from play  and he got good support in the scoring stakes from Danny Cummins.

First-half goals from Patrick Sweeney and Shane Walsh helped Galway succeed with Ger Egan and Kieran Martin raising green flags for Westmeath. Sweeney and Egan exchanged early goals before Walsh netted from a penalty for Galway. A goal before the break by Martin left the teams tied at 2-6 apiece at the midway mark.

Galway forged ahead in the second-half and were two points clear near the finish before John Heslin cut the deficit to a minimum. The same player had a chance to force a draw but his late shot hit the post and Galway held on to secure the spoils.

Scorers for Galway:  Patrick Sweeney 1-5, Danny Cummins 0-3, Shane Walsh 1-0 (1-0 pen), Paul Varley, Adrian Varley, Gary O’Donnell, Michael Martin (0-1f), Sean Denvir 0-1 each.

Scorers for Westmeath: John Heslin 0-7 (0-6f), Kieran Martin 1-1, Ger Egan 1-0, Callum McCormack 0-2, Lorcan Smyth, D Lynch 0-1 each.
