Joe Brolly calls for an end to 'out of county' managers in the GAA

The pundit believes the amateur ethos is being drained from the organisation.

OUTSPOKEN SUNDAY GAME pundit Joe Brolly has called for a ban on counties being managed by outsiders as well as an end to clubs drafting in non-members as managers.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Sunday Sport earlier today, the 45-year old said he believed there was a “black market” in paid managers with the GAA “slowly but surely moving away from the community-based idealistic organisation that we’re meant to be.”

The Derry native suggested that, by allegedly paying managers, teams were allowing them more time to develop professional training programmes for their players which has a negative impact on the game.

“What happens is, the players’ lives become entirely controlled, and nothing has been done to prevent this.”

Brolly, who was on the show on the back of a column he wrote this week in which he compared modern players to indentured slaves, said he believed the solution was to return to a situation where only members were allowed to manage club sides and only those from within a county allowed to manage the inter-county team.
