You come at Santa, you best not miss! Notts County reveal Sheridan lost his job for Christmas present rant

The club’s owner has today confirmed it was that, not nine consecutive losses, that cost the former Ireland international.

NOTTS COUNTY OWNER Alan Hardy has revealed that manager John Sheridan was not sacked for the club’s poor results but instead for gross misconduct following his foul-mouthed rant at match officials.

Last week, the FA released their written decision on Sheridan’s disciplinary hearing — where he was given a five-match touchline ban and fined £2,500 for the x-rated outburst — which included details from referee Eddie Ilderton who took charge of the club’s 2-0 defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers on 10 December.

Ilderton wrote: “In the 55th minute fourth official Matthew Donohue informed me that Notts County manager John Sheridan should be removed from the technical area for his behaviour towards himself.

“I then asked Mr Sheridan to leave the technical area, and take a place in the stands.

‘You’re a fucking disgrace, you’re fucking useless, you’ve not fucking got anything right today, you should be fucking ashamed, you’re fucking shit, my kids aren’t going to get any fucking Christmas presents because of fucking you.’

“Mr Sheridan then took his place in the stands for the rest of the game”

Hardy has now revealed it was that, rather than his club’s record run of nine consecutive league defeats, which led to his departure from Meadow Lane.

Sheridan has since been employed as Oldham manager for the fifth time.

“I wish to make it clear that this sort of behaviour by any employee of this club will not be tolerated,” he said in a statement on the club’s official website.

Comments of the type made by Mr Sheridan were utterly appalling and wholly unacceptable, completely undermining the community spirit and focus we are striving to develop here.

“In light of the recent disclosure of the referee’s report, I thought it appropriate to communicate the exact reasons behind the course of action we took.”
