IN CASE YOU haven’t heard already, Ireland have drawn Estonia in the Euro 2012 play-offs.
The immediate reaction among Irish fans seemed to be one of delight, as Estonia were undoubtedly the team that most people wanted us to draw – a whopping 67% of you indicated as much in another recent Score.ie poll.
And indeed, there is reason to be optimistic. Estonia scraped through their group by a single point, only after Serbia lost to Slovenia in the last game of the group qualifying campaign.
Moreover, they are 29 places below Ireland in the FIFA World Rankings and even struggled in both their qualifying games against the minnows of Faroe Islands, losing on one occasion.
Are we being too optimistic though? Estonia’s qualifying group could hardly be considered easy and they are capable of scoring spectacular goals such as this one.
In addition, Ireland often perform better when they are considered the underdogs – a tag that seems unlikely to be applied on this occasion.
So with that in mind, what do you think the outcome will be against the Estonians?
