Russia vow not to underestimate Ireland

Dmitri Torbinski has denied that his side are the favourites going into today’s vital Group B encounter.

RUSSIA AND LOKOMOTIV Moscow winger Dmitri Torbinski has promised not to underestimate Ireland when the two sides meet today, playing down speculation that his side are the favourites to win.

Two points separate the sides as they go into this potentially decisive group encounter.

He also said Russia’s 3-2 win in Dublin back in October means nothing ahead of today’s game:

“Russia managed to win back then but I do not agree with those who consider us favourites. I always assume the odds are even before the whistle is blown. Then everything depends on motivation, implementing your game plan and taking your chances. Ireland play British-style football, and Damien Duff, Robbie Keane and Aiden McGeady are a potent attack.”

Despite Torbinski’s cautious sentiments, the results of today’s Score.ie poll indicates that Russia’s favourites tag is justified, with 52% of people predicting Ireland will lose today.

The game kicks off at 4pm today and TheScore.ie will be providing minute-by-minute coverage of all the action in Moscow.
