Sweeney and Treacy take cross country titles

The Dublin and Meath-born runners won the men and women’s respective races in Sligo yesterday.

DUBLINER JOE SWEENEY has claimed the Woodie’s DIY Senior Inter County Cross Country Championships, after winning the Men’s Senior Race in Sligo.

As a result of his win, Sweeney is now guaranteed a place on the Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships in December.

He lead the race from early on, winning with a time of 32.07, well ahead of his nearest challenger – Andrew Ledwith of Meath – who finished with a time of 32.53.

Meanwhile, Sarah Louise Treacy of Meath won the Senior Women’s Race at the same event with a time of 31.10.

Treacy was part of a leading pack throughout the race, which also included Aoife Culhane (nee Byrne), Claire McCarty (Cork), Kerry Harty (Down), Eilish Kelly (Roscommon) and Lizzie Lee (Cork).

However, in the final lap Treacy and Culhane escaped the pack, before Culhane suffered a fall that enabled Treacy to win the race, while she had to be content with finishing third, behind McCarty.

In addition, Jake Byrne of Westmeath won the Junior Men’s Race, while Siofra Clerigh Buttner (Dublin) triumphed in the Junior Women’s Race.
