The Departures Lounge: your daily lunchtime transfer round-up

Find out about the latest Newcastle player Man United want to sign, which Liverpool midfielder Chelsea are interested in and why Theo Walcott has criticised Fabio Capello.

JUST WHEN YOU thought Arsenal fans couldn’t be more annoyed with Wenger’s transfer dealings (or lack thereof), news emerges that the club are being linked with Joe Cole.

If the rumour is true, Wenger seems to be subscribing to the Steven Gerrard school of irrational thought if he thinks Cole can replace Fabregas.

Speaking of Arsenal, they have apparently appointed Robin ‘not exactly Tony Adams’ Van Persie as their new captain in light of Fabregas’ departure.

Liverpool’s search for a creative midfielder continues, after Celtic apparently rejected a tentative enquiry for Paddy McCourt. If he does sign for Liverpool, any tabloid worth their salt will lead with the headline: “Paddy McCourt Ha Ha Ha”.

While McCourt may be good enough for Liverpool, Raul Meireles isn’t, it would seem. He is, however, wanted by Chelsea.

Celtic may sign the striker who rejected them for Blackburn a few years back – Craig Bellamy – albeit on loan, though Man City would have to pay some of his wages.

Remember how Sven Goran Eriksson had an unflinching devotion to Owen Hargreaves during his England days? Well, the relationship looks set to be renewed.

Elsewhere, West Brom will do their utmost to keep hold of Peter Odemwingie by offering him a new contract. The 30-year-old player is wanted by Wigan, as having Conor Sammon up front just isn’t good enough these days apparently.

And finally, Theo Walcott has took the immensely brave step of criticising Fabio Capello, saying he has at times been left “confused” by Capello’s instructions and “never quite knew what was required”.

Ill-advised prospective deal of the day: Man United have bid £14million for Cheik Tiote, who can be a liability at the best of times, given the amount of yellow cards he picks up.

Advised prospective deal of the day: Jamie Carragher no longer appears to be the player he once was, so Liverpool’s bid for Ryan Shawcross could result in one of Kenny Dalglish’s more astute signings.
