The Morning Score: Wednesday

Here’s your daily round-up of the morning’s news. You aren’t giving up sport for Lent, are you?

1. #MUNSTER Munster may be in the market for a new head coach soon after it emerged last night that Tony McGahan is set to to return to his native Australia at the end of the season.

McGahan, who has been at Thomond Park since the summer of 2008, is tipped to become the defence coach in Robbie Deans’s Wallabies set-up.

2. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Andre Villas Boas is under more pressure this morning after his Chelsea side lost 3-1 away to Napoli in the last 16 of the Champions League last night. Goals from Edinson Cavani and a double from Ezequiel Lavezzi helped Napoli come from behind after Juan Mata had given the visitors the lead in the first half.

Tonight, Marseille take on Claudio Ranieri’s Inter Milan in the Velodrome and Manchester United’s conquerors FC Basle host Bayern Munich in Switzerland.

3. #GALWAY Galway’s senior hurlers suffered a massive blow last night with the news that star forward Joe Canning could miss a large chunk of the league season through injury.

The Portumna man starred in Limerick IT’s win against GMIT in the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-finals yesterday, but was taken to hospital afterwards with a suspected dislocated shoulder.

4. #SIX NATIONS Declan Kidney has named an unchanged team from the one which turned up to play in Paris for Saturday’s clash with Italy at Lansdowne Road. That means Keith Earls will make his first start in this year’s tournament while Johnny Sexton is preferred at out-half ahead of Ronan O’Gara.

5. #WORLD MATCH PLAY Rory McIlroy goes into the Accenture Match Play today knowing that a win could see him become the No1 ranked golfer in the world for the first time in his career. The 22-year-old has been paried with South African George Coetzee for the opening round in Tuscon, Arizona.

6. #AIRTRICITY LEAGUE Bohemians could be in line for some unexpected European football this season after UEFA rejected Derry City’s application to play in the 2012/2013 Europa League.

Candystripes chairman Philip O’Doherty indicated that the club are unlikely to appeal the decision, which upheld a UEFA rule prohibiting teams from playing in Europe unless they have been licensed in their home country for three years.

Is this game-losing dunk the dumbest play of the NBA season?
