Rather than use a hand-off, this Tongan prop just tried to punch his opponent away

Sona Taumalolo tried to punch a Fijian tackler.

THE HAND-OFF IS part of almost every rugby player’s arsenal.

Sometimes though, players can get a little bit over aggressive with their hand-off attempts, and Tongan prop Sona Taumalolo is definitely one of them.

His side opened their Pacific Nations Cup campaign at the weekend with a 30-22 defeat to Fiji, and Taumalolo was a lucky man not to end up in the sin bin at the very least.

After Fiji’s opening try (which is definitely worth a watch) frustrations started to build, and as Taumalolo took on a ball in midfield, he seemed to lose his head completely.

Rather than running at the Fijian tackler and hand him off, the Tongan stopped in his tracks, before swinging a right hook in the direction of the tackler, and then running at him.

On the replays, we can see that Taumalolo threw one hell of a right hook, but luckily it didn’t connect with his opponent, and he’s even luckier that referee Chris Pollock didn’t seem to notice.
