Young Irish defender rewarded with 4-year contract by Leeds after first-team breakthrough

They think highly of Conor Shaughnessy at Elland Road.

CONOR SHAUGHNESSY HAS committed his future to Leeds United by penning a new contract with the Championship club.

The deal will keep the Galway native, who moved to Leeds in 2016 after four years with Reading, at Elland Road until 2021.

A central defender who can also play in midfield, Shaugnessy has impressed new Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen since making his first-team debut on the opening day of the season against Bolton Wanderers.

The 21-year-old has featured five times in total this season, with Leeds currently leading the standings in their bid to return to the Premier League next season.

Shaughnessy, whose older brother Joe is a defender in the Scottish Premiership for St Johnstone, was rewarded for his progress with Leeds when he was called up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad for the recent European Championship qualifier away to Azerbaijan.

“I’m delighted for Conor. He is a hard-working, talented and versatile footballer who has an excellent attitude and work ethic,” said academy manager Adam Underwood, who oversaw the early stages of Shaughnessy’s time at Leeds.

“He impressed everyone at the academy from his first trial period at the club around a year ago and in the space of 12 months he has established himself with our U23s and moved up to represent the first team.”
