WORLD RUGBY HAVE confirmed they are “seeking information” in relation to reports that Wales used players from outside their 31-man squad at training on Wednesday.
World Cup regulations state that back-up players are not allowed to train with the official squad and must not stay in the same hotel.
However, a number of players – Nicky Smith, Rob Evans, Kristian Dacey, Rhys Patchell, Aled Summerhill, Dan Baker, Jordan Williams and Dan Fish — all trained with Warren Gatland’s side at London Irish’s Sunbury facility during the 10-minute section that was open to the media.
According to various reports, Wales do not believe they have contravened any tournament regulations as the players returned home after training and did not stay with the team.
While early indications are that World Rugby believe this to be an honest mistake, even if Wales were to be found guilty there is no prospect of a points deduction with a fine or reprimand the more likely sanction.
Elsewhere, Rhys Webb has been ruled out of action until well into 2016 after undergoing surgery on his foot.
The scrum-half sustained what has been described as a “significant” injury during Wales’ final Rugby World Cup warm match earlier this month and is now back with the Ospreys for his recovery and rehabilitation.
Chris Towers, Medical Performance Manager at the Ospreys, confirmed:
“Rhys sustained a significant foot ligament injury that required surgical stabilisation. He has had the surgery and will be non-weight bearing for six weeks and will then wear a protective boot for a further four to six weeks.”
