THE LOUTH AND Tyrone footballers picked up victories in Division 2 of the league tonight, while the Clare hurlers have clinched promotion back to the top flight of the hurling league.

Clare’s fifth successive win in Division 1B in hurling, achieved at the expense of Carlow, saw them clinch promotion with Brian Lohan’s team having one game left to play. Shane Meehan struck the only goal of the game at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Meehan finished with 1-3, while free-taker Mark Rodgers was top scorer with 0-11 for the 2024 All-Ireland champions, and youngster Diarmuid Stritch picked off 0-4. Chris Nolan pointed the way for Carlow with 0-11.

In Division 2 of the football league, Louth, inspired by Ciaran Downey and Sam Mulroy, ran out 1-22 to 1-12 victors away from home against Cavan.

Downey fired 1-4, while Mulroy chipped in with 0-6, as the Wee County claimed a ten-point success.

The result saw Louth back up their home victory over Tyrone last week with Ryan Burns (0-4) and Paul Matthews (0-3) both impacted in the scoring stakes as well.

Paddy Lynch hit 0-4 for Cavan, while Ciaran Brady (Corofin) grabbed Cavan’s goal. The defeat leaves Cavan second from bottom after five games and facing a relegation fight, while Louth are in fourth and still in with a shout of promotion.

Tyrone were comfortable winners as they posted 0-28 in their victory over Offaly in Dungannon. The results leave the Faithful pointless after five games and on the brink of being relegated to Division 3.

Darragh Flynn and Jack McEvoy struck goals for Offaly, but they lost out by nine points. Malachy O’Rourke’s side had plenty players contributing to their scoring tally – Ruairi Canavan firing five points, while Darren McCurry, Ronan Cassidy, Mattie Donnelly, and Sean O’Donnell all hit three points apiece.

In Division 3, the Down footballers are in line for a return to the second tier after picking up their fifth win on the bounce today. They defeated Fermanagh by three points to leave them four points clear on the table of Westmeath and Clare.

That pair endured contrasting fortunes tonight, Westmeath losing by nine points to a Laois side, 3-16 to 1-13, that still retain promotion hopes. Paul Madden’s Clare team were too strong for Limerick, 1-21 to 1-12 winners in Rathkeale, to remain in the hunt for promotion.

Finally in Division 4, Antrim claimed a vital win as they saw off Wicklow 2-18 to 1-14, in the process denting the promotion ambitions of Oisin McConville’s side.
