EX-CHELSEA BOSS Guus Hiddink has stepped down as manager of Turkey following their 3-0 aggregate play-off defeat against Croatia.
It marks the end of a short spell in charge for the Dutchman, who took charge in August 2010.
A statement from Turkey’s official website read: “We would like to thank Mr Guus Hiddink for his services during his working period, and wish him all the best in his future career.”
Hiddink had previously indicated that he was unlikely to stay on as boss following their defeat last night:
“I worked for the future of Turkey but I think this is my last match with this team – there is a high probability of that.”
The manager is arguably most renowned for guiding South Korea as far as the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup and has enjoyed mixed fortunes in international football with Netherlands, Australia and Russia.
He has already been linked with a number of jobs following this news, including the director of football post at Chelsea.
