LIVE: Republic of Ireland v Austria, Uefa Nations League

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side return to action at a sold-out Aviva Stadium.

GOAL! Ireland 2-2 Austria (Michael Gregoritsch, 77 mins)

Oh no. Gregoritsch bends in a free-kick from the edge of the box, Kelleher is hesitant and it’s 2-2. Two goals in five minutes, disaster for Ireland.

Ireland 2-1 Austria

75 mins - Ireland double substitution: Chiedozie Ogbene and Jake O’Brien come in for Parrott and Abankwah. Parrott gets a huge reception.

GOAL! Ireland 2-1 Austria (Alexander Prass, 71 mins)

Disappointment for Ireland, who are caught in possession and Austria punish.

Alexander Prass rifles home his first international goal – the referee initially chalks it off, but VAR overturns and they can belatedly celebrate. A story of two substitutes, with Liam Kitching the guilty Irish party and he’ll have to quickly put that one out of his mind.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

66 mins - ’Come on you Boys In Green’ is belted out as Manning takes a corner, won after a threatening Azaz delivery is put out. An Austrian defender rises highest to clear, and is awarded a free-kick in the process, much to the disgruntlement of the home crowd. They get over it pretty quickly, now singing The Fields of Athenry.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

65 mins - More Parrott magic, as he turns a hapless Autrian player and looks to play Moylan through but he runs out of road. Parrott then tries to get in behind himself, Moylan wins a free and the Aviva erupts.

Austria make another change, as Alexander Prass comes on.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

62 mins - The Aviva crowd ooooh and aaaah after another lovely Irish move, switching the play and creating another opening but it doesn’t amount to a clear-cut chance. Still, it’s hugely encouraging as they click time and time again.

Ireland subs: Liam Kitching for Liam Scales, and Jayson Molumby for Adam Idah.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

60 mins - Abankwah sees yellow for a challenge on Scmid, and he will be suspended for the next game against Israel.

Ireland weather the storm from the subsequent free-kick, with Kelleher doing well.

Ireland preparing two substitutions…

Ireland 2-0 Austria

58 mins – Ireland look to take the impetus, but Abankwah is dispossessed in the box after good build-up play from Moylan and Manning. More good Ireland momentum, but Parrott’s pocket is picked with Idah in a good position.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

55 mins – Scrappy enough the last few minutes, possession switching over and back as neither side can get a real foothold. The half-time stragglers are still streaming back to their seats with curry chips and Tayto aplenty.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

50 mins – How good have the Irish front three been tonight? Parrott, Idah and Moylan link up again – with Azaz pulling strings behind them – but they can’t muster up the killer blow.

Bizarre moment at the other end as Gregoritsch looks like he can strike one as a delivery beats everyone, but the substitute holds his run and that seems like a decent chance going abegging.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

49 mins - Ireland perplexed after conceding a few soft free-kicks, Austria looking to up their game. They carve through their hosts, with Kalajdzic lining up a shot, but Scales steps up with a brilliant piece of last-ditch defending and Manning clears Ireland’s lines.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

48 mins - Austria, who have changed their shape with two up top, look to come out of the traps, but Ireland pick up where they left off. They’re playing some lovely football, with Abankwah and Azaz particularly prominent since the restart.

SECOND-HALF: Austria get us back underway.

Ralf Ragnick makes a triple-change: Maximillian Wober, Konrad Laimer and Michael Gregoritsch.

Here’s Parrott’s goals that have Ireland 2-0 up…

And that crucial Kelleher save….

So Ireland are in control at the break, 2-0 up after Troy Parrott’s brilliant brace.

Their main man has been unplayable; his sensational individual early goal setting the tone before a cooly-converted penalty just on the brink of half-time.

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side have been the better side for the most part, but Austria have had their moments. Caoimhin Kelleher stepped up with a big save to deny Patrick Wimmer between Ireland’s two goals, and the visitors have held a threat.

But Ireland will be happy with their first-half efforts – and the buzz around Aviva Stadium after a difficult few days.

There have been disruptions too, with the game paused twice due to a tennis ball protest and pitch invader. Let’s see what the second half brings…

Ireland 2-0 Austria

45 mins (+4) – Manning’s long-range free-kick is comfortably claimed by Austrian ‘keeper Florian Wiegele after Parrott is bundled over.

Ireland – and Abankwah in particular – defending well as they look to see this first half out.

Ireland 2-0 Austria

45 mins (+2) - There have been five minutes added on, Ireland looking to head into the dressing room with their 2-0 lead after Troy Parrott’s double.

GOAL! Ireland 2-0 Austria (Parrott, 45 mins)

Cool as you like, Parrott slots right, the ball kissing off the post and nestling in the net.

The Aviva is bouncing.

PENALTY FOR IRELAND!

Manning goes down, and the referee points straight to the spot, not entertaining any Austrian appeals.

Parrott steps up…

Ireland 1-0 Austria

42 mins – More great attacking play from Ireland, Moylan does well to win a corner after linking up with Parrott.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

40 mins – SAVE! Brilliant from Kelleher to react quickly and tip a snatched Wimmer effort over the bar.

Scales is alert to the subsequent corner, and the next, as Ireland relieve another spell of pressure.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

35 mins - An Austrian corner is delayed due to a pitch invader. He was carrying a Palestine flag, and was quickly removed by the stewards.

Some images – courtesy of Inpho – of the tennis balls which were thrown onto the pitch after 19 and a half minutes, and their subsequent removal.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

30 mins - Kelleher with a comfortable save to deny Patrick Wimmer in a sea of Irish bodies. Scales with a huge recovery block to deny Xaver Schlager, and concede a corner, as Austria lift it a few notches.

The corner causes problems for Ireland, but Kelleher stands firm.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

27 mins – Oooooft. An Austrian boot with a crucial touch as Idah is about to pull the trigger, superb build-up play with Parrott. Ireland causing real problems. Austria clear their lines after Jack Moylan’s corner – he has been bright again tonight.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

25 mins – Austria have been brighter since the restart, growing into the game. Nicolas Seiwald lifts over after a good team move.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

22 mins – We’re back underway.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

19 mins – The game is stopped momentarily after tennis balls are thrown onto the pitch. Referee Allard Lindhout calls a halt to play, and the teams regroup with some boos ringing out.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

16 mins - More pressure from the hosts there, Parrott playing with huge confidence. Ireland with the first corner of the game, but it amounts to nothing. Then they have to weather a storm, but come through unscathed. Transitional at times, but Ireland must be happy with their start.

Here’s that Parrott opener. Magic.

Ireland 1-0 Austria

15 mins – Well, what a moment that was. Austria have looked to respond immediately with a rare attack, Schmid goes down in the box but it’s waved on. James Abankwah is bundled over shortly afterwards, and Ireland have a free out. They’ve had 63% possession so far.

GOAL! Ireland 1-0 Austria (Parrott, 12 mins)

Wow. What a goal. Superb from Parrott, pure and utter individual brilliance.

Ireland’s main man goes himself, dancing through the Austrian defence and sending the ball through the ‘keeper’s legs for his 13th international goal.

Sensational. Olé, olé rings out.

Ireland 0-0 Austria

8 mins – Appeals around the stadium for a penalty as Manning goes to ground in the box after Stefan Posch’s boot is high on the clearances. Replays show there was no touch.

Very early days, but an encouraging start for Ireland – and the home crowd are loving it.

Ireland 0-0 Austria

6 mins - Ryan Manning is the latest Irish player urged to ‘shoooooot’ but he’s blocked down. Adam Idah coming alive, as the Boys In Green apply most of the early pressure.

Ireland 0-0 Austria

5 mins - Ireland respond by pouring bodies forward, but there’s no way through. Good pace to the early exchanges.

Ireland 0-0 Austria

2 mins - Ireland enjoying the early possession, before Parrott is bundled over by Sasa Kalajdzic, and he fires an early warning shot from way out over the bar. Nervy early moment for the back-pedalling Caoimhin Kelleher.

KICK-OFF! Troy Parrott gets us underway.

Amhrán na bhFiann has been sung with gusto, with fans breaking into, ‘Come on you Boys In Green’ immediately. The vocal Austrian support hit back. The last of the formalities underway, and then it’s showtime…

The teams are out on the pitch, and the anthems underway…

Meanwhile, the RTÉ panel have been discussing the Israel games, and the fallout from Debrecen.

With 10 minutes to go, it’s pretty quiet in Aviva Stadium. The FAI said this fixture as sold-out, but there’s a huge amount of empty seats around the stadium. Most of the punters must still be enjoying their pre-match food and drinks, while heavy security could also be playing a factor.

There’s decent Hungarian support here, a gaggle of red making themselves heard. As expected, Troy Parrott’s name gets the loudest cheer as the teams are read out.

More support for Gavin Bazunu captured around Aviva Stadium…

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign were also handing these out around the stadium, with plans in place for in-game protests.

There is a Stop The Game protest underway outside the stadium.

Protesters have gathered holding banners that read, ‘Stop The Game,’ and ‘Show Israel the red card,’ among others.

They also had signs for Gavin Bazunu – who withdrew from the squad for the Israel game but is back tonight – and chanted his name, along with, ‘Free, free Palestine’.

Drivers passing by offered their support with beeps, while a cyclist raised his hand in solidarity.

There’s a heavy Garda and security presence around, as expected, but there was no trouble as The 42 made its way into the stadium
