2017 Cheltenham Gold winner Sizing John ruled out for the season

Trainer Jessica Harrington has confirmed that the nine-year-old is set for a lengthy absence.

SIZING JOHN WILL not compete for the rest of the current National Hunt season after suffering an injury setback.

The nine-year-old, who won the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Robbie Power on board, has not run in over a year due to a pelvic issue.

His long-awaited return at the Dublin Racing Festival was put off due to the unsuitable ground conditions, and trainer Jessica Harrington has revealed today that the lengthy spell out of action will continue.

“Unfortunately Sizing John has met with a setback and he will miss the remainder of this season,” Harrington said on her Unibet blog.

After routine exercise yesterday, I wasn’t happy with him and our vet came down and examined him.

“He has confirmed to me that he has met with a setback, which means that he won’t run at Cheltenham or Punchestown. His owners have been informed and, naturally, they are very disappointed, as is everyone at Commonstown.”
