Ireland international Shane Duffy leaves Everton to join Blackburn

The 22-year-old has penned a three-year deal at Ewood Park.

IRELAND INTERNATIONAL SHANE Duffy has joined Blackburn Rovers from Everton for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £1.5million (€1.9million).

The 22-year-old defender has signed a three-year contract at Ewood Park.

Derry native Duffy first joined Everton at the age of 16, having played for Foyle Harps as a youth. The centre back eventually graduated from Everton’s academy to make 10 senior appearances for the Premier League club.

However, nailing down a first-team spot proved difficult for Duffy, who moved away from Everton on a number of loan spells in recent years. He spent last season with Yeovil Town in the Championship, where he enjoyed extensive game time.

Duffy, who stands 6ft 4ins tall, was an underage international with Northern Ireland up to U21 level, before deciding to switch to play for the Republic of Ireland. He made his senior debut under Martin O’Neill in May’s 1-1 draw with Costa Rica.

The defender will now hope to push his career to the next level, managed by Gary Bowyer at Blackburn in the second-tier Championship. O’Neill and Ireland assistant Roy Keane will be watching his progress with interest.
